Designing Sanity Mode against the gamification grain

No streaks, no badges, no guilt. Building a deliberately calm app in a category obsessed with dark patterns and retention metrics.

Anti-pattern

Every meditation app we tried punished us for missing a day. So the brief was: never make the user feel bad for closing the tab.

Design moves

No streaks. No notifications. Soft sage palette. A serif headline so it feels like a book, not a dashboard.

The trade-off

Retention metrics look worse on paper. The people who do come back, come back because they want to.
